How to Use an Automatic Threader on a Sewing Machine

Threading a needle is often the most frustrating part of sewing. An automatic threader can reduce threading time from 30 seconds to under 10 seconds per attempt — but only if you use it correctly. Use the needle position button (if your machine has one) or turn the handwheel counter-clockwise until the needle reaches its highest point and the mark on the wheel points straight up.

Leave about 4 inches (10 cm) of thread extending toward you.

Step 4 — Activate the threader. Touch the automatic needle threader button (on fully automated machines) or pull the threading lever down to its lowest position until the twin thread guide rotates and stops.

Step 5 — Release and check. Release the lever (or wait for the automated cycle to finish). The wire hook will have pulled the thread through the needle eye. Gently pull the thread loop away from you — if the needle is threaded, you will see a loop of thread passing through the eye. If not, repeat from Step 2.
